Carrboro film maker's satire a hit on iFilm

iFilm is showing a South Parkesque comics-parody film written, animated, and voice-acted by Alex Wilson of Carrboro, NC:

All's Fair in Love and Police Actions

What if an icon like Marvel's Captain America was to the U.S. government what Mickey Mouse has been to Disney? Here's what a taxpayer-funded Steamboat Willy might've looked like during the Vietnam War in 1971. This isn't the most sophisticated animation you've ever seen (it actually makes South Park look sophisticated) but it's well written and acted by Wilson.

The film garnered more than 3,000 views in the few days since its premiere on iFilm, where it's the most popular short film of the moment.

SF author Cory Doctorow ("Magic Kingdom," and the blog, Boing Boing) calls it "amazingly funny and well-executed." Doctorow is one of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' favorite writers. His Boing Boing blog is among the most popular on the Net.

Full Frame Founder Reappointed to Film Council

Gov. Easley has reappointed Nancy Buirski of Durham to the N.C. Film Council. Buirski is founder and executive director of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, held annually in Durham. She is a panel moderator for the Tribeca Film Festival, a member of the Independent Feature Project and the Real Screen Summit.

By the way, do check out the Independent Feature Project and Real Screen Summit links if you're interested in independent or documentary film-making.

Buirski received the Dewitt Wallace Fellowship in Media and Journalism at Duke University in 1996. She attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and received her bachelor’s degree in English from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. She built the Full Frame Festival into a worldclass event that doubled its attendance this year. It attracts big league players such as Ken Burns, Michael Moore, and Martin Scorsese for its four-day slate of documentaries. It's unquestionably the major player among the state's numerous film festivals.

The council serves as a forum for film-making concerns and makes recommendations to the secretary of the N.C. Dept. of Commerce relating to the film industry in the state. The council has 25 members, each serving three-year terms. The governor appoints all members.

State Officials On Hollywood Sales Mission

Dept. of Commerce Secretary Jim Fain led a film industry sales mission to Hollywood to promote the state’s newly-passed film incentives. Accompanied by Tourism, Film and Sports Development Director Lynn Minges, Bill Arnold and Joan Alford of the N.C. Film Office, regional film commissioners and members of the N.C. film industry, the Secretary is hosted a reception for more than 100 top industry executives on Wednesday evening.

The Secretary and Commerce officials will also be meeting with studio production and finance executives, producers, directors and other industry operatives. Regional film commissioners and assorted representatives of North Carolina’s film industry will also make calls during the week to promote filming in the state.

Film incentives providing for a 15 percent return on in-state production spending on goods, services and labor for production companies that reach a spending threshold of $250,000 were passed by the legislature earlier this month and signed into law by Gov. Mike Easley on Aug. 13. The new measures are expected to increase film and television production statewide and maintain North Carolina’s 20-year reign as the No. 3 filmmaking state in the nation, according to Film Office Director Bill Arnold. Several projects currently filming in the state or about to have cited the incentives as one reason they're working here.

Here's what the Raleigh News and Observer has to say about it: N.C. FILM PROPONENTS HOPE TO LURE A-LISTERS

Eden Mill To be Film Site

Hidden Agenda Entertainment, an independent film company based in Caswell County, will film a special effects scene at the Eden, NC, Morehead Mill on Boone Road.

Here's what J. Brian Ewing had to say about it in the Eden Daily News: Out of the Ruins of the Textile Industry a Star is Born...

Rewind: Some Previous Posts Still Interesting

"Z-Channel" was among our favorite films at this year's "Full Frame Documentary Festival." You can find our coverage in our April posts. Theresa Russell, left, starred with Art Garfunkel in Nick Roeg's "Bad Timing," which the director of "Z-Channel," the talented Xan Cassavetes, daughter of film-maker and actor John Cassavetes, first saw on the famed Los Angeles cable channel of the 80s.

April is a big month in NC Film Festivaldom. This year Martin Scorsese, a board member for the Full Frame Docufest showed up and we were there to get shots of him at his press conference. But we also got a nice shot of the aging but still charismatic Cliff Robertson at RiverRun in Winston-Salem. We also caught the wonky, weird and incomparable "Naked Monster" at RiverRun, and saw a sign for our Pennsylvania home town on the wall of the bar where they showed the film. We blogged that, too. Not to mention introducing the prolific Monroe, NC writer John Kenneth Muir, who's penned books on "Evil Dead" and "Spiderman" director Sam Rami, and one of our favorites, the irreverent and wildly funny "Silent Bob" himself, Kevin Smith of "Clerks" and "Dogma," fame and others.

This year's Full Frame also gave us a look at Indie Producer John Pierson in Steve James portrait of his family's year in Bali showing films for free to the natives, which is more dramatic than it sounds. This got some press on Indie Wire recently and will be showing up in theatres and IFC.

"Z-Channel," which has been running on IFC, was part of a set of movies about movies and movie makers and showing movies that formed an unbilled sub-theme at Full Frame and RiverRun this year. IFC even did a one-day showing of films that many saw first on that legendary Los Angeles "Z-Channel," including Russell in "Bad Timing." That one gets us charged up, especially the steamy stairway scene.

Check all this out in our April posts.

"Dual," a satiric and suspenseful takeoff on Steven Spielberg's TV Movie "Duel," which jump-started his career, is a lot of fun, although some over at Atom films, where it resides, disagree. Give it a look. The link is on our original post: DUAL

NC Film Incentives Passed

The NC Legislature passed the much needed incentives for film-makers who lens movies in the state.

Along with the higher cost of doing business overseas due to the declining value of the American dollar, an increase in production in the state -- which film makers themselves admit is in much due to the incentives -- include the Will Ferell NASCAR movie planned to film in Charlotte, and NBC's "Surface," filming on the coast.

"Best of Youth" at Cary's Galaxy Cinemas

The Italian film "The Best of Youth," a six-hour epic about two brothers, one a policeman and one a psychiatrist got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. It's showing at Cary's Galaxy cinemas, 770 Cary Towne Boulevard, Cary, NC, 27511, formerly the Madstone.

It's the only multiplex art house in the Research Triangle.

Highly recommened, but you'll have to take an afternoon and evening to see it.

We're hoping it's there long enough for us to catch it on the big screen.

Charlotte's Scream Queen In a Comedy

Every so often, we discover some highly talented independent film-makers in NC doing very unusual things. Charlotte residents Mark Baranowski and his wife Ryli Morgan for instance. They've made several independent films on bare bones resources, but Ryli's natural beauty and Mark's relentless creativity which includes writing scripts and music, are the stuff dreams are made of.

Ryli, as comely a lass as they come, and then some, has gained praise from no less than the Drive-In Man himself, king of the B film critics
, Joe Bob Briggs, who says she's his favorite "Scream Queen" of all time and he's seen them all. Not only that, she gets good words from make-up artist Tom Savini, who did the effects for Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," not to mention acting in that, Romero's latest Zombie flick, and other seminal works of the genre.

Baranowski/Morgan's On Mark Productions is recognized mainly for its straight-to-video contributions to the erotic horror/thriller genre. But recently, the couple decided to reinvent themselves and do a comedy-drama. The August 14th production wrap date of their latest film--a comedy-drama entitled Heaven Help Me, I'm In Love--approches..

On Mark Productions was created in September 2001, when the couple made their first film, the grim and thought provoking Despair (featured among the extras on Seduction Cinema's Roxanna DVD, shortly thereafter).

Five months later, they released a short film, which Baranowski scored and edited himself, entitled Ryli Morgan: Audition. And what an audition it was... Initially released on VHS in limited quantities, the film quickly sold out, and would later become one of the extras on the DVD release of their first feature, Runaway Terror. Filmed using the barest of resources, this title would nevertheless be praised by both critics and audiences alike for its original spin on the typical slasher film formula, further enhanced by a pounding soundtrack by Marquis (one of Baranowski's numerous pseudonyms) and Ohio-based techno wizards Dubok.

Baranowski wrote Expendable, his most appreciated and requested title to date. Starring only himself, Ryli Morgan, a lovely newcomer named Rachelle Williams, and veteran “Scream Queen” Brinke Stevens, this otherwise standard drama becomes a bloodbath—literally—by the last ten minutes of the film.

Based on the merits of Expendable, Sterling/Vista Street Entertainment commissioned Baranowski to direct a film for them less than six months later, an erotic thriller entitled Sin By Murder.

You'll be hearing lots more about this couple and their work here and in more depth on www.ncflix.com.

Second Cinema Screening "Vignette"

The Second Cinema Blog says this month they'll be screening "Vignette," which they describe as " produced by Mint Julip Productions, a charming tale brought to life with amazing costumes, period cars and locations."

They're also screening a video to Greensboro Band Farewell's song "Kelly Green" produced by Hyperactive Entertainment and you can also see the video on the Hyperactive Web site, as well as other films the company has done. Nice work, too. It does require a Flash player to watch the films, though.

Second Cinema is always worth a look and they give NC filmmakers a much needed showcase.
