DeliMan The Movie

*** followed by Inaugural CJFF Chicken Soup Contest

The deli man himself Ziggy Gruber (a Yiddish-speaking, French trained chef) and director Erik Greenberg Anjou are scheduled to appear and guide the audience through the history and lore of those long loved delicacies - pastrami, kreplach and of course, chicken soup. DeliMan shares the history, anecdotes and humor that once made one's local delicatessen the virtual epicenter not only of food, but of family and community.

DeliMan visits meccas like Carnegie Deli, Katz’s, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate ‘n Al, and Canter’s, and includes interviews with some of the great connoisseurs of deli, including Jerry Stiller, Alan Dershowitz, Fyvush Finkel, and Larry King.

Ziggy & Erik take part in an audience Q&A and be judges in the Inaugural CJFF Chicken Soup Contest that will take place after the film. The contest is open to everyone – if you’d like to put your soup to the test, check out details at this link.

Above and Beyond

An encore presentation of the co-winner of the 2015 CJFF Audience Award.

Above and Beyond honors the group of Jewish American pilots who answered the call to fly in the 1948 War of Independence and formed what is now the Israeli Air Force.

The first major feature-length documentary about these heroic airmen, Above and Beyond brings together new interviews with the pilots and stunning aerial footage to present a fascinating, little-known tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah.

The film was produced by Nancy Spielberg and has received additional Audience Awards from festival goers in Atlanta, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and Miami.

5:00 PM - Tailgating Party
7:00 PM - Movie - Touchdown Israel

Packed with gridiron action and irreverent humor, Touchdown Israel goes inside the improbable rise of the pigskin sport in the Holy Land.

American-style, full-contact, tackle football was first imported in the late 1980s by foreign-born Israelis who missed the scrimmages of their youth. Hampered by woefully inadequate playing fields and an indifferent public, the Israeli Football League received a boost from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who funded a stadium.

Today, the Israeli Football League is thriving, with 10 teams and nearly 500 players from a cross-section of Israeli society, including Arabs, Christians, secular and Orthodox Jews. Touchdown Israel celebrates the unifying power of sports amidst the broad religious and cultural diversity of Israel.

At 5:00 PM, the CJFF will hold a special Tailgating Party (food and beverages provided). Touchdown Israel's director Paul Hirschberger is scheduled to appear and will do a talk back with the audience after the film.

The CJFF has won Charlotte Magazine's Voter's Choice Award for Best Local Film Festival/Series for four consecutive years and it's easy to see why.
