Cucalorus Board Member wins Sundance Award

Wilmington-based filmmaker Jacqueline Olive, a Works-in-Progress graduate, alumni of the Residency Artist Program, Filmed in NC Grant Recipient, and current Cucalorus Board Member, premiered her film Always in Season at Sundance and came away with a Special Jury Award for Moral Urgency.

The documentary film tells the tragic story of Lennon Lacy, an African-American 17-year-old found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro in 2014. Officials ruled his death a suicide, but Lacy’s mother, Claudia, believes her son, who was dating a white girl, was lynched. The film documents Claudia's efforts to get justice for her son and presents evidence of his murder and examines the history of lynchings in the South.

Always in Season screened as a work in progress at Wilmington’s Cucalorus Festival in 2016 and is currently touring film festivals across the country.

The LA Times published a review of the film...
